How Reverse Osmosis Works
Reverse Osmosis is a process by which water flows though micron filters usually carbon block filters as well as sediment filters and then finally, passes through a membrane where two things happen:
- Water passes through the membrane (this water is called permeate) and then goes into a pressurized storage tank that usually holds about 2 Gallons of treated water.
- Dissolved minerals and other impurities are rejected by the membrane and flow to the drain (this water is typically called waste water).
When you open the faucet for the purified water, the pressure tank delivers the treated water to you.
Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems are typically easy to install. They require a hole in the sink to accommodate the separate faucet, access to the kitchen sink plumbing (usually found under the sink) and a space for the small storage tank. If space under the kitchen sink is limited, there is also the option to have your Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System installed in the basement.
Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems require annual servicing. This is important in order to prolong and protect the life of the membrane as well as to keep the system sanitized.
